Fungibility

Fungibility

Last Updated: January 11, 2026

Fungibility is the quality of an asset to be interchangeable with another of the same type and value.

Fungibility is a key characteristic of assets like currencies. It means that each unit is indistinguishable and interchangeable with another equal unit. For example, one dollar is the same as any other dollar, and one Bitcoin is equivalent to any other Bitcoin. This property is crucial for maintaining liquidity in markets, as it ensures that assets can be easily exchanged. Without fungibility, the value of individual units could vary, complicating transactions and undermining trust in the asset's reliability as a medium of exchange.
