Proof of Authority (PoA)

Proof of Authority (PoA)

Last Updated: January 11, 2026

Proof of Authority is a consensus mechanism relying on trusted validators, prioritizing reputation over computational power for blockchain validation.

Proof of Authority is a consensus mechanism used in blockchain networks. It relies on a small number of trusted validators to approve transactions. Unlike Proof of Work or Proof of Stake, PoA doesn't require extensive computational resources or large amounts of cryptocurrency. Instead, validators are pre-approved and must maintain their reputation to remain trusted. This system enhances transaction speed and efficiency, making it suitable for private blockchains or consortiums where trust is established. PoA reduces the risk of malicious attacks but requires participants to trust the validators, unlike more decentralized models. This trade-off favors speed and efficiency.
